Searching for a “California DMV practice test” usually means one thing: you want to pass the knowledge test. This guide explains exactly what each California test covers — the permit/knowledge test, motorcycle (M1), and commercial (CDL) — how the scoring works, which languages are available, and the most efficient way to study.

The fastest path is also the cheapest: the California Driver Handbook and the official DMV practice tests are both free at dmv.ca.gov. Use this guide to know what to study, then practice with the official tests until you’re consistently scoring above the 83% passing mark.

Study for your DMV test — 6 steps

Studying is mostly free — the handbook and official practice tests cost nothing.

1
Get the current Driver Handbook
Free at any DMV office and as a free PDF at dmv.ca.gov.
2
Read each chapter
Signs, signals, right-of-way, speed, sharing the road, and alcohol/drugs are the heaviest-tested.
3
Quiz yourself by topic
After each chapter, test recall before moving on — focus on signs and right-of-way.
4
Take full mock tests
Use the official DMV practice tests (free) under timed conditions.
5
Review what you missed
Re-read the handbook section for every wrong answer; missed questions repeat in patterns.

Tip. You don't bring anything to practice — practice is online and free. Documents are only for the official test at the DMV.
The bigger picture

How practice tests fit into getting your license

Passing a knowledge test is one step toward a credential — the prep here feeds directly into getting a driver's license. You study from the handbook, pass the written test, then take the behind-the-wheel test at a DMV office. Booking and forms run through DMV services and the forms & fees library. This pillar is the study layer; the license pillar is the destination.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the California DMV test?
An original Class C knowledge test has 36 questions; you must answer 30 correctly (83%) to pass. The renewal version is 18 questions, 15 to pass — though most renewals no longer require a knowledge test. Practice with the official tests.
What's the passing score?
83% — 30 of 36 on the original knowledge test (15 of 18 on a renewal). Missing more than 6 (original) means you don't pass that attempt.
Can I retake the test if I fail?
Yes — you get up to three attempts per application. After three, you reapply and pay the application fee again. See first-license steps.
Are practice tests realistic?
The official DMV practice tests use the same question style and topics as the real exam. They're the closest preparation to the actual test.
Are there practice tests in Spanish?
Yes — the knowledge test and official practice tests are offered in Spanish and many other languages (Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, and more).
How long does the official test take?
Most people finish the written knowledge test in 20–30 minutes. There's no strict time limit for the standard paper/terminal test at the office.
Can I take the knowledge test online?
Some applicants — such as those under 18 and new residents from out of state — can take it online; most other first-time applicants take it at a DMV office. See online services.
Where else can I practice for free?
The official DMV practice tests and the Driver Handbook are free at dmv.ca.gov. Popular third-party study apps include DMV Genie, DMV Permit Test, and ePermit Test — useful, but the official tests are free and authoritative.
What if my English isn't strong?
Take the test in your preferred language (many are offered, including Spanish and Chinese), and study the handbook in that language so you're prepared.
Are CDL tests harder than the regular test?
They're broader — CDL covers general knowledge plus air brakes, combination vehicles, and any endorsements you need. Each endorsement has its own test.
Do I need to take a test to renew my license?
Usually not — most renewals skip the knowledge test. Drivers 70+ must renew in person for a vision check and photo, but since 2024 they generally don't take a knowledge test unless their driving record requires it. See renewal.
What does the motorcycle test cover?
A written test on motorcycle-specific rules and signs, plus a skills test (or a CMSP course that waives it). See Class M licensing.
When do interactive practice tests arrive on this site?
The interactive tests are scheduled for Group 5. Until then, this guide explains each test and links to the free official DMV practice tests.
