How licenses connect to the rest of the system
A California driver's license is one piece of a wider DMV system. Your license is linked to your vehicle registration through the DMV's records, and to your address on file. Most license services can be done at a DMV office or through online services. The forms and fees for every transaction are catalogued in our forms library, and you can prepare for any required test using our free California practice tests. Specific driver populations — teens, seniors, non-citizens, veterans, and commercial drivers — each have additional rules covered in our driver-type guides.

A REAL ID is federally compliant (needed to fly domestically since May 7, 2025); a standard license is marked "Federal Limits Apply." Same $46 fee.

Yes for first licenses, REAL ID, and any road test; no for most renewals, address changes, and duplicates, which are online.
