About Motorcycle service

To earn a California motorcycle license (M1 or M2), most riders take a skills test on a closed course — offered only at select field offices. Many riders instead complete an approved California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) course, which waives the DMV skills test entirely.

Bring your own motorcycle

For the skills test you must provide a registered, insured motorcycle in safe operating condition and wear a DOT-approved helmet. A CMSP course waives this requirement.

Step by step

How to book a Motorcycle appointment

Pass the motorcycle knowledge test and get your permit first.

Book a motorcycle skills test at an office that offers it (listed above).

Bring a registered, insured motorcycle and DOT-approved helmet.

Or complete a CMSP course to skip the DMV skills test.

Frequently asked questions

Which offices give the motorcycle skills test?
Only select field offices administer it. The list above shows the offices we have confirmed offer the motorcycle skills test, by appointment.
Can I skip the DMV skills test?
Yes — completing an approved CMSP training course satisfies the skills requirement and is often faster than waiting for a DMV slot.
Do I bring my own motorcycle?
Yes. You must provide a registered, insured motorcycle in safe operating condition and wear a DOT-approved helmet.
